The film opens with a nighttime journey through Mumbai's bustling markets, where the camera captures the lively street scenes with a documentary-like realism, immersing us in the city's daily life. This vibrant backdrop introduces us to Prabha, a dedicated nurse working long shifts at a hospital. Independent and passionate about her work, Prabha shares her life in the big city with her roommate and friend, Anu, as they both search for love and connection. While Anu is involved in a forbidden relationship with Shiaz, a Muslim man, Prabha struggles to remain loyal to her husband, who lives abroad in Germany. Indian director Payal Kapadia had a great success with her first documentary film A Night of Knowing Nothing in Cannes in 2021 winning Golden Eye Award for Best Documentary. Her stylistic trademark is clear images that slowly slip into poetic realms which is also the casein “All We Imagine as Light”, which mixes the romantic life of protagonists with the dreams and struggles of other Mumbai residents. The film flows and glides through the streets, accompanied by an elegiac piano soundtrack. In a beautiful twist, the women's journey takes them to a coastal village where they find the freedom and intimacy they were denied in Mumbai. All We Imagine as Light is a precious discovery that won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Festival.
