The final exams are coming up, and this is a tough time for the patriotic Abel. He is in love with Janke, but she ignores him because she likes the left-wing history teacher Jakab. Abel has to take his exam with him - and fails. It is clear to Abel that the teacher has failed him because of his nationalist views. The initial school squabbles soon develop into a political scandal. Abel's father, an ardent supporter of Viktor Orbán, senses a conspiracy and makes a big deal of the case. The conflict escalates when the father confronts Jakab. Director Gábor Reisz delivers a striking portrait of Hungary's contemporary political and social tensions. The dialogue-rich, intelligent screenplay explores generational and political divides, blending distinctly Hungarian elements with universally resonant themes. Collaborating with co-writer Éva Schulze, Reisz employs a chapter-based structure, offering multiple perspectives on the same events and creating a Rashomon-like effect. Visually, the film impresses with its long, unbroken takes, drawing inspiration from the Romanian New Wave. Explanation for Everything is a sharp and compelling work that vividly captures the fractures within modern Hungarian society. In 2023, it won the top prize in the Orizzonti section at the Venice Film Festival.
