DOG ON TRIAL

Switzerland | France | Laetitia Dosch

The courtroom movie is booming in French cinema. The directorial debut of Laetitia Dosch deals with a delicate animal case. This time, it's not a human but a dog in the dock. Cosmos, a restless four-legged friend, has to answer for his bestial deeds in court. After biting three people, he is threatened with being euthanized. Cosmos' only salvation is the lawyer April, played by director Dosch herself. Initially unenthusiastic about her new furry client, the lawyer gradually develops a deep affection for Cosmos, and for his grumpy owner Dariush. “Crazy but ingenious” is a perfect description for Dog on Trial. It masterfully blends humor with serious themes, delving into moral and ethical issues such as animal rights, the marginalization of outsiders, and the increasing influence of populist movements. A standout character is Roseline Bruckenheimer, a power-driven politician and lawyer who fiercely advocates for Cosmos' death, embodying the manipulative force of populist rhetoric. Through her, the film subtly reflects the rise of right-wing parties across Europe. This unconventional, sharp-witted courtroom drama is laced with humor and a touch of melancholy. It premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, where the film’s canine star, Kodi, won the Palme Dog.
