PREMIERE! WORLD CINEMA FESTIVAL COMES TO MUNICH FOR THE FIRST TIME

From December 11 to 16, 2023, AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS will be hosted in Munich for the first time, showcasing outstanding works of contemporary world cinema in cooperation with the Yorck Kino Group at the City Kinos. The festival will present 21 films from the current festival program at the City Kinos (City 1, Atelier 1 and 2), curated by festival directors Bernhard Karl and Susanne Bieger. The Munich premiere will kick off on Monday, December 11, 2023, with The Boy and the Heron, the latest work by Japan’s anime legend Hayao Miyazaki and his Studio Ghibli. Another major Japanese director, Ryūsuke Hamaguchi, will have his new film Evil Does Not Exist screened in Munich, a film awarded the Grand Jury Prize in Venice. Hamaguchi’s masterpiece Drive My Car (2021) had been celebrated worldwide and won 80 film and festival awards. Other highlights of the festival include works from Lithuania, Georgia, Congo, Tunisia, China, Malaysia, Vietnam, Mongolia, and Iran.

The program will feature iconic directors such as Agnieszka Holland, whose heavily debated film Green Border will be shown, Andrew Haigh, Lisandro Alonso, and Nuri Bilge Ceylan, as well as captivating voices of young global cinema, proving that the future and diversity of world cinema are "in excellent hands." From Germany, Life is not a competition, but I’m winning by Julia Fuhr Mann, a student at Munich’s HFF, will be featured. Award-winning cinematic works supported by the Berlinale World Cinema Fund are also to be discovered, along with eight films that have been submitted for the 2024 Oscars® in the "Best International Feature Film" category. The Munich audience will also have the chance to see two award-winning films from the International Competitions at the last Munich Film Festival: Four Daughters by Kaouther Ben Hania (CineMasters Award) and Augure (CineRebels Award).

Bernhard Karl: Excitement for Munich’s Curious Audience

Half of the films are directed by women. All films will be presented from December 11 to 16 by Bernhard Karl, founder and director of the World Cinema Festival. “I’ve often been asked why our cinematic world tour doesn’t go on a tour itself. Now the time has finally come: We have chosen Munich as our first stop. My hometown and the place where, since 2008, I have been partly responsible for the international program of the Munich Film Festival. We are very excited about the beautifully renovated Atelier Kinos and the curious Munich audience, with whom I am very familiar,” says Bernhard Karl. A program overview for Munich is available at www.14films.de. Tickets for the Munich program of AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS are now available for €12 at www.city-kinos.de. Address: City Kinos, Sonnenstraße 12a, 80331 Munich.

Preview: From January 17 to 21, 2024, the festival will also host a pop-up version at Schloss Elmau, Bavaria.

The 18th edition of AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS will take place in Berlin from December 1 to 9, 2023, at Kino in der KulturBrauerei as well as delphi LUX, Neues Off, and Rollberg cinemas. Main sponsors in 2023 are Audi City Berlin, ARTE, CineStar, and KWK / Karl-Wilhelm Kayser.
