FROM USA TO IRAN – THE FIRST COMPETITION FILMS

The first nine entries in the “14 Films” competition at the 18th Berlin World Cinema Festival include many feature film debuts as well as the winning film from Locarno, “Critical Zone” by Iranian director Ali Ahmadzadeh. From Germany comes Julia Fuhr Mann's Venice entry “Life is not a competition, but I'm winning” . With nine exciting and award-winning works by five female directors and four male directors from Argentina, the USA, France, Germany, Lithuania, Georgia, Jordan, Iran and Vietnam, the first competition entries in the cinematic world tour in 14 films have been confirmed. The “14 Films” series is the heart of AROUND THE WORLD IN 14 FILMS. The 14 films that the festival will show as German and Berlin premieres from December 1 to 9, 2023 include numerous international festival hits and award winners from Cannes, Venice, Locarno and Sundance.

"Critical Zone" , a "dark social portrait" (Frankfurter Rundschau) about a drug dealer in modern-day Tehran, recently received the Golden Leopard in Locarno. The range of content and fascination of the nine films is exemplified in the family drama "Àma Gloria" by the French director Marie Amachoukeli, which impresses with the stunning performance of the six-year-old child actress Louise Mauroy-Panzani, or in "Life is not a competition, but I'm winning" , a "brightly colored, queer-feminist manifesto" (HFF Munich), in which Julia Fuhr Mann deals with binary gender categories in the world of sport.
